The history of the Schnurrpfeiffereyen began in Eveshausen, a small village in the Hunsrück, where mainly bagpipe and hurdy-gurdy players from Germany and neighboring countries came together in the early 1980s. At these regular meetings, experiences about instrument making were exchanged, songs and dances were learned from each other and music was played and danced in a convivial get-together.

A musical treasure chest

As it was not easy for lovers of traditional folk music and early music to obtain sheet music at that time, Martina Sirtl took on the task of recording the international repertoire heard and played, and designed these wonderfully illustrated and musically unique collections.

“Schnurrpfeiffereyen – Volume 3”: A new milestone

Volume 3 contains 56 melodies and 17 songs: In this last volume of the collection, historical and newer songs and dances are presented in the same loving design and layout, expanding the repertoire.

  • Chapter 4: 11 partly polyphonic songs by Renaissance song composers.

A collection for drone instruments and beyond

The songs and dances, mostly notated for one voice and easy to play, are particularly suitable for drone instruments such as bagpipes and hurdy-gurdy in the main keys of ‘C’, ‘G’ and ‘F’.

Foreword

“Schnurrpfeiffereyen”, a collection of historical and new songs and dances, was published by the Musikantengemeinschaft Eveshausen im Hunsrück in the years 1981-84 in a 1st edition of volumes 1 and 2.

The “Verlag der Spielleute”, founded in 1988, took over the work and published the 2nd edition of both volumes at the end of 1988.
Due to popular demand, the publisher and editor have decided to produce a third volume of this collection. The interest in this type of music has not waned.

In this 3rd volume, further historical and more recent songs and dances are presented, arranged in five chapters according to origin and composer. They deserve to be republished before they disappear completely into the archives of libraries. They can no longer be found in the programs of the major German music publishers.

Martina Sirtl

Martina Sirtl, then a member of the Spielleut group and publisher of traditional music, played an important role in the publishing work. In the 1970s, she and her group began digging up old songs and reworking them for today’s ears. Martina helped to found the Spielleute publishing house, which provided extensive information material. This publishing house was founded in 1988 and published books and music that supported the medieval and renaissance music scene.

The group Spielleut was a pioneer in the medieval and renaissance music scene and helped to establish these musical styles in Germany. They not only played music, but were also actively involved in the preservation and dissemination of old songs. The publishing work of Martina and her colleagues was an important contribution to the promotion of traditional music.
