Foreword

Dear readers, you are holding the first volume of a new series of books in your hands, which will contain various techniques and building instructions from the many years of experience of instrument maker Pavel Číp. In the following volumes, not only bagpipes but also other “forgotten” instruments are described and detailed instructions for their construction are published. It is now only up to the skill of each individual hobby instrument maker whether such old instruments will enrich today’s folk music again. And all that remains for me to do is to wish you lots of fun and success in rebuilding it.

Pavel Číp

Pavel Číp is a true master of traditional craftsmanship. Pavel was born in Zubří in 1944 and is at home in the world of traditional musical instruments and craftsmanship.

Pavel has been fascinated by woodwork since he was a child and has never let go of this passion. He graduated from StÅ™ední průmyslovou Å¡kolu in Vsetín and acquired a profound knowledge of woodworking over the years. In 1978 he received his official qualification in woodworking and was appointed “Master of Folk Art”.

In the 70s and 80s, Pavel worked in the Ústředí lidové umělecké výroby and created traditional wooden objects, from smoke-blackened wooden vessels to folk toys, figures and pipes.

But what really sets him apart is his passion for traditional musical instruments, especially the bagpipes. Together with the musician and maker of traditional instruments Joža Orság Vranický, he planned the reconstruction of traditional Moravian bagpipes. But Pavel only realized this vision after Vranický’s death. With meticulous research and consultations with experts, he finally succeeded in making his first Moravian bagpipes for the folklore group JavoÅ™ina in 1985.

Today, Pavel continues his craft in the family company Pavel Číp & synové in Zubří. There he not only produces modern bagpipes and gajd, but is also dedicated to the restoration of historical bagpipes. He also makes flutes, whistles from animal horns and double sound meyers. His production of wooden sable flutes is unique and he has been the only one in the Czech Republic to produce them since 1995.

Pavel Číp is a true treasure in the world of traditional music and craftsmanship. His knowledge and dedication are invaluable to those interested in these ancient sounds and the art of woodworking.
