Nyckelharpa Tabulatures
Tablatures for 4-row chromatic nyckelharpa by Marco Suppo

Description
“Nyckelharpa Tabulatures” contains tablatures, a form of musical notation that shows the fingerings on the instrument instead of the pitches. They have their roots in the 14th century. Originally developed to capture the polyphony in music, they were used particularly in the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Not only for stringed instruments such as the lute and guitar, but also for keyboard and string instruments, tablatures formed an important basis for musical training and practice. Today they are experiencing a renaissance in genres such as rock, pop and folk, as they make it much easier to learn the basic chords.
The nyckelharpa and the baryton: a musical symbiosis
The baryton, a string instrument with melody and resonance strings, makes it possible to accompany melodies with arpeggios and chords and thus offers a perfect complement to the nyckelharpa. The versatility of the nyckelharpa, from counterpoint to polyphonic melodic accompaniment, opens up a broad spectrum of musical expression.
Marco Suppo’s vision: tradition meets innovation
Marco Suppo’s initiative to create a special tablature for the nyckelharpa combines traditional musical practice with innovative approaches in a unique way. This combination promises to open up new perspectives and playing techniques for both experienced players and newcomers.

Foreword
Tablature is a form of musical notation that indicates the fingerings of the instruments rather than the pitches. At the beginning of the 14th century, tablatures were invented to write down several parts of a polyphonic composition. In the Renaissance and Baroque periods, tablatures were common for fretted stringed instruments such as the lute, harp, vihuela or guitar, for keyboard instruments such as the organ and for string instruments such as the baryton.
The baryton (viola di bordone) is an instrument that combines well with the nyckelharpa/viola d’amore a chiavi: a kind of viola da gamba, equipped with six melody strings and a variable number of resonance strings, which can play melodies as well as accompany a melody with arpeggios and chords: a wonderful continuo instrument.
Tablatures are still frequently used today in the notation of rock, pop, folk, ragtime, bluegrass and blues music, especially for the guitar, as they are a great help in memorizing the fingerings for the basic chords.
In Swedish iconography, we often see the combination of fiddle and nyckelharpa player. The possibilities of the nyckelharpa range from counterpoint to the violin to polyphonic accompaniment of the melody, thanks to its keyboard and the “flat” bridge, with arpeggios, double and even triads.
Marco Suppo’s idea of compiling a tablature for our instrument is both ancient and modern, innovative but respectful of tradition.
It is a great pleasure to entrust this volume to the growing community of nyckelharpa players, safe in the knowledge that it will encourage new ideas for the use of our beloved instrument.
