If you’ve always wanted to know how the medieval bagpipe is played or where you can find authentic sheet music and material for it, then you’ve come to the right place at Verlag der Spielleute! In one of our Instagram Reels, Brian Haase, the frontman of Fabula, tells us about his long-standing relationship with the publisher and provides exciting insights into the German bagpipe tradition.

A look back: Brian’s story with the minstrels’ publishing house
Brian has known the Spielleute publishing house since the 90s. “I ordered from the publisher for the first time in 1995 or 1996,” he says. Back then, a lot of things were still done by post and there were little flyers that you could fill out. “I ordered my first sheet music books there, including the famous ‘Sackpfeiffer’s Handbook’. The publishing house was THE address for bagpipers.”
The German bagpipe: an instrument with a history
What many people may not know: The bagpipe was a folk instrument that was widespread in Germany until the 18th century. It was not until the 1970s that it experienced a renaissance. Today, it can often be seen again at medieval markets and folk music events. But the instruments that are played today are not really old – they just look that way! “We build them based on old illustrations, but the instruments themselves are relatively new,” explains Brian.
Thomas Zöller and the Bagpipe Academy
Brian also mentions Thomas Zöller, a close friend of his and director of the Bagpipe Academy in Hofheim. The two are currently working on the third edition of the music collection for the medieval bagpipe. This collection contains 50 pieces in the keys of A and D – perfect for beginners and advanced players.
